Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly condemned the recent call for the forced relocation of Igbo people from Lagos and other Southwest states, describing it as “deeply troubling” and “fundamentally opposed” to Nigeria’s principles of unity and coexistence.
In a statement, Atiku emphasized the dangers of hate speech and ethnic division, citing the devastating consequences of similar rhetoric in Rwanda. He called on the Nigerian government and relevant authorities to take immediate and strong action against those inciting hatred and division, including investigation, arrest, and prosecution.
Atiku stressed the importance of diversity and the need to resist efforts to sow discord among Nigerians. He urged all citizens to stand united against divisive rhetoric and champion unity, tolerance, and understanding.
The statement comes five days after the #IgboMustGo threat emerged, and Atiku expressed alarm at the government’s silence, emphasizing the need for swift action to protect the fundamental principle of unity and ensure that every Nigerian can live free from fear of discrimination or persecution.
