The Center for Reform and Public Advocacy has condemned the constant attacks on Nigeria’s Judiciary by Professor Chidi Odinkalu and Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, describing them as needless, baseless, and unwarranted. At a press conference held on October 4, 2024, Kalu Kalu Agu, Esq., Head of Legal Services, urged the public to join them in protecting the judiciary from unwarranted criticisms.
According to Kalu Kalu Agu, the attacks on the judiciary not only undermine the rule of law but also erode public trust in institutions. He emphasized that the judiciary’s role is to guard justice and protect constitutional rights, and collective action is necessary to safeguard its independence and integrity.
Kalu Kalu Agu Esq noted that disagreement with judgments is natural, but violence, blackmail, and intimidation of judges are unacceptable. He encouraged lawyers and litigants to follow established channels to ventilate their grievances, such as exercising their constitutional right to appeal or petitioning the National Judicial Council.
The Center for Reform and Public Advocacy called on the Nigeria Bar Association to sanction erring lawyers who attack judges after losing cases in court. Agu emphasized that lawyers must conduct themselves with integrity, honesty, and respect for the law and the judiciary.
The Center for Reform and Public Advocacy urged Nigerians to unite against the incessant attacks on the judiciary and work together to build a justice system that inspires confidence and trust. They emphasized that the time to stop these attacks is now, and it is everyone’s responsibility to act.
This is not the first time Professor Chidi Odinkalu has been criticized for his comments on the judiciary. Previously, he has been accused of making reckless commentaries on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)
