Three officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have been reportedly kidnapped in Aloma, a community in Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State, while traveling to Anambra State for an official assignment.
According to eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday when the INEC officials, traveling in a private vehicle, were intercepted by unknown gunmen along the Aloma–Ugwolawo road. The attackers reportedly forced the vehicle to a halt and whisked the victims into the nearby forest.
Local sources told Naija Reality News that the victims were part of a team on transit to Anambra for election-related duties. Their identities are yet to be made public at the time of filing this report.
Security operatives, including men of the Nigeria Police Force and local vigilante groups, have since launched a manhunt to rescue the abducted officials and apprehend the perpetrators.
A senior INEC official in the state, who spoke under anonymity, described the development as “a major threat to the safety of electoral personnel and the credibility of electoral operations across the country.”
As of press time, neither INEC headquarters in Abuja nor the Kogi State Police Command has issued an official statement regarding the abduction.
The incident has sparked widespread concern, with residents and civic groups calling on the federal and state governments to intensify security measures across highways, especially in Kogi East, which has witnessed a surge in kidnapping cases in recent months.
