The Nigerian Christian community and the nation at large have been thrown into mourning following the passing of one of Africa’s most revered evangelists, Reverend Dr. Uma Ukpai, at the age of 80.

According to reports, the iconic preacher and founder of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association (UUEA) breathed his last in the early hours of Monday, October 13, 2025, in Lagos State.

Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai was a household name across Nigeria and beyond — a man whose fiery sermons, healing crusades, and prophetic declarations inspired millions over several decades. He was known for his humility, discipline, and unwavering dedication to the spread of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Born in Abia State in January 1945, Rev. Ukpai rose from humble beginnings to become one of Nigeria’s most influential clerics. His ministry, established in the late 1970s, championed revival, unity, and evangelism across denominations, breaking barriers of tribe and creed.

For over five decades, the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association organized mega crusades that drew thousands of worshippers from all walks of life. His teachings emphasized faith, integrity, and the power of prayer. Beyond the pulpit, Rev. Ukpai was a nation builder — known for advocating peace, youth empowerment, and interfaith harmony. He often reminded Nigerians that “a praying nation is a winning nation,” urging the government and citizens alike to return to moral and spiritual values.

Tributes have begun to pour in from Christian leaders, government officials, and admirers around the world. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) described his passing as “a monumental loss to the body of Christ,” while several Pentecostal leaders called him “a father of faith whose life exemplified grace and purpose.” Social media platforms have since been flooded with condolence messages, with many describing him as a man who “fought the good fight of faith and finished well.”

Details of his funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by the family. However, close associates revealed that plans are underway to give the late evangelist a befitting farewell that reflects his global spiritual impact.

Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai is survived by his wife, Dr. Mrs. Philomena Uma Ukpai, children, grandchildren, and thousands of spiritual sons and daughters across the world.

May his soul rest in perfect peace.
